Well there are a lot of things we can say these days, but one of those many, many things is NOT “we have a shortage of zombie books”. Nope. Trust me, I was just saying it to my neighbor the other day and he corrected me by Googling “Zombie” and “Book” together. (I thought Amazon would crash its servers spewing out so many results.)

But just when you thought it was too dangerous to wander into the Kindle Store for fear of being eaten by the undead, along comes the brilliant Frederick Lee Brooke to write a fun, original, totally entertaining book about zombies. Not your normal fare at all.

Whenever I write a review I am always challenged not to give away too much. But to tantalize your reading taste buds, I will tell you this: ZOMBIE CANDY and Frederick Lee have convinced me that revenge is not, after all, a dish best served cold; it is a dish best served ZOMBIE.

I have to admit a tainted little secret here: I love revenge stories. I love things like comeuppance, what goes around comes around, and karma.

With his latest Annie Ogden mystery, FLB has constructed a completely original take on the zombie culture, those who love it, and most particularly anyone who loves zombies, zombie movies, zombie books, etc. more than they love their own wives.

This book has love, sex, betrayal, intelligence, intrigue, and a revenge plot Stephen King could not have constructed. What more can you ask for in a book? Frederick Lee Brooke is an excellent writer—I read and reviewed his debut novel (also first in the Annie Ogden series, titled DOING MAX VINYL).

ZOMBIE CANDY pulled me in right away. I was immediately drawn to the characters and their intricate interaction. It was pretty clear that I, the reader, was being led willingly into the intricate maze of the author’s mind and that the trip was going to be a wild one.

It WAS. Wow. I mentioned before I love revenge stories. Brooke has herein devised one of the most elaborate labyrinths for his literary victim. I cannot go further or I would be wading into the spoiler swamp and I don’t want to do that. You are OWED the pleasure of experiencing this ride without any more clues.

Overall ZOMBIE CANDY is an extraordinarily fun ride, but not your cliché roller coaster. No, this ones builds to a crescendo, again walking the reader (and the victim) through the labyrinth of one of the best revenge stories I’ve read in a long while.

I decided to give ZOMBIE CANDY four and one half stars. Brooke’s writing, as always, is FIVE STAR. The unique plot garnered five as well. In the end, however, I was disappointed by the lack of Annie Ogden. I grew to love her character in the first book and I felt she was more of a bit player in this one. So half a star. I had to. If I didn’t love Annie’s character as much as I do, I would have gone all the way to five stars (and it really is a great book). I wanted more Annie, though, and this is my way of telling Brooke that he’s an amazing writer and plots one HECK of a great book (and he executes) but darn it, I want more of Annie. That, however, is my only criticism. And a half-star deduction is pittance. ZOMBIE CANDY is a book you’ll be wanting to snap up for a GREAT summer read; a read, ride, and a plot you won’t soon forget!!

BRAVO, Frederick Lee Brooke. I will be eagerly awaiting his next.
